Children's feet grow in bursts, and in this climate shoes get wet, sandy and hot almost every day. These are the points we go through with parents at the fitting bench.
Younger children can go up a size in three to four months, and older kids in about six. Children rarely say a shoe is too small, they curl their toes instead. Come in for a quick measure at the start of each school term, and bring your child rather than the old pair.
Aim for roughly a thumb's width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe, enough for growth, not so much that the heel slips. Buying two sizes up to stretch the money usually backfires: a loose shoe trips kids and wears out at the heel long before they grow into it.
For school, look for a reinforced toe, a stitched rather than only glued sole, and a secure closure. Velcro or elastic slip-ons work for younger children who can't tie laces yet; older kids do better with laces that stay put through PE.
Junior runners need cushioning and flexibility rather than a stiff adult-style trainer. For court sports, a grippy flat outsole gives better traction on hard surfaces than a running tread.
Mesh uppers keep small feet cooler and dry faster after a beach afternoon. Keep a pair of sandals or flip-flops for sand and pool so the school shoes aren't the ones soaking in salt water.
Shake sand out after every beach day, air-dry away from direct sun, and check the tread and heel counter monthly, a worn-down heel is the sign to replace, even if the shoe looks fine on top.
