Choosing women's shoes for island walking, work and resort days
Most women who come into the store are buying for more than one setting, a shift, a long walk downtown, and then the beach. Here's how we narrow it down in a fitting.
All-day walking and sightseeing
For long days exploring Oranjestad or the hotel strip, a lightweight cushioned runner or a slip-in walking shoe will treat your feet far better than a flat canvas sneaker. Look for a soft, well-shaped footbed and a flexible forefoot, that combination is what stops the ache that shows up around hour four.
Running and training
Choose by what your foot does, not by color. Cushioned sneakers like the New Balance 9060 suit most people; if your arches collapse inward, a supportive trainer will hold the midfoot better. Women's-specific lasts are usually narrower through the heel, which is why a men's pair in the same length often slips.
Long shifts on your feet
Hotel, retail and restaurant staff should prioritise cushioning and, on wet floors, a slip-resistant outsole. A slip-in style is easier to take on and off during breaks, which genuinely helps on a double shift.
Beach, pool and resort wear
Keep sandals and flip-flops separate from your walking shoes, soft foam sandals such as Flojos are made for short distances and wet ground, not for a day on hard pavement. Rinse salt and sand off after the beach so the footbed doesn't stiffen.
Heat and breathability

Getting the fit right
Shop in the afternoon when your feet have swollen, wear your usual socks, and have both feet measured, most people have one slightly larger, and that's the one to fit. Leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe.
