Aruba's kitchens, resort floors and restaurant terraces are a hard environment for footwear: wet tile, grease, sand tracked in from the beach, and shifts that run eight to twelve hours in constant heat. This is what we look at with hospitality staff who come in for work shoes, and what we recommend once we know where you actually stand all day.
For kitchen and dishwashing areas you want a slip-resistant rubber outsole with a fine, densely siped tread, small channels that break the film of water or oil under the foot instead of riding on top of it. Skechers Work styles are our most-requested for this reason. A flat-bottomed lifestyle sneaker or a smooth-soled leather shoe will feel fine in the store and dangerous on a wet prep-area floor.
Kitchen and back-of-house staff should choose a fully closed, water-resistant leather or coated upper that hot water and spilled oil run off, rather than mesh that soaks through. Housekeeping, bell staff and front-of-house teams who walk far more than they stand can go lighter: a breathable knit or perforated upper keeps feet much cooler across an Aruban afternoon, and dries out faster after a humid shift.
Standing still on tile is harder on the body than walking. If you work a fixed station, line cook, bar, front desk, cashier, prioritise a thicker memory-foam or cushioned insole and a supportive midsole that doesn't collapse by month three. If your shift is mostly walking rooms, corridors and property grounds, a lighter shoe with moderate cushioning will tire you less than a heavy padded one.
Flat feet and fallen arches are the most common complaint we hear from long-shift staff. Look for a shoe with a genuine supportive footbed, or plan to add an aftershift insole. Many hospitality workers also do well with a slip-in or clog style that can be taken off during breaks to let feet recover.
Feet swell in Aruba's heat and over a long shift, so size for the end of the day, not the start. Come in during the afternoon if you can, wear the socks you actually work in, and leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe. We fit both feet, most people have one slightly larger, and size to the bigger one.
Salt air and daily washdowns age work shoes quickly. Rinse off grease and salt with a damp cloth rather than soaking the shoe, let them air-dry away from direct sun, and rotate two pairs if you work six days, foam midsoles need time to rebound. Replace once the tread pattern smooths out, because that's when slip resistance is gone even if the shoe still looks presentable.
